Well, the first class in over. We got over a lot of basics, which we will follow up with lots of resources on this site. If the math was a bit scary, not to worry… we will be switching back to the capabilities to a 4-function calculator soon! We had over 50 names on the sign-up sheet, which means sadly we won’t be able to accept all of you. So please get your submissions in, and we’ll try to get out decisions by Saturday.

Techniques for Design and Fabrication is course that focuses on the realistic challenges of designing and building with technology, as well as the basic theory underlying how such systems work. The intent is to provide students with practical skills in electronics, fabrication, mechatronics, and materials selection and production, and is tailored to the requirements of the work done at the Media Lab. Rather than focusing on the low level workings of the tools used, we will point out at practical concerns and underlying rationale that drive the implementation and production of working prototypes and demos.

My name is Adela Kalenja and I’m a first year SMArchS in Design and Computation. I’m interested in kinetic architecture and the skills that are taught in MAS 962 would be great assets to my research. I’m interested in taking all the sections of the course. I have no practical experience with electronics but I’m really good with physics and algebra.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hope for good news.

I hope to take the Mechatronics part of the course to compliment my programming knowledge. This will help me in future designs working with affective computing. You never know what you are going to need to build to measure happiness!

1st year architecture - SMArchS computation & design

I first taught myself to script/program because I wanted to make a fruit basket made from perfectly fitting curved interlocking plastic strips. I called it the wobbol. It was a rather simple idea, but I didn’t give it up until I wrote a program that could output the laser file from the input of seven key variables. Nevertheless, it was just a fruit basket.

I want to make much more than fruit baskets, and indeed the wobbol told me it would like some robot friends. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to attack the world of electronics as easily as I did the script editor. So, I need to take all segments of this course to get the skills I am lacking.

2nd year SMArchs Design and Computation

EXPERIENCE

Programming: I know JAVA and now I am taking a Python course (6.034). Likewise I have widely used Rhino Script, Max Script and Processing.

Electronics/Digital: I know how to use Arduino microcontroller but I really need to go further by embedding circuits within the object itself.

Electronics/Analog: I have done Sensor Technology. But as Mark may know there is still too much I still need to learn.

WHY

I was looking for a mechatronics course since I arrived to MIT. I am working on a kinetic dome that changes its form though the use of sensors, servo motors and Arduino microcontrollers. This entire project has been developed by me with little knowledge… and I would like to have a more serious background. I think this course and particularly the mechatronics segment will be the ideal for me as this is my last year and this project will be part of my thesis.

2nd year architecture - Smarchs design & computation

I am working at design lab at this moment, and i need to build several interactive prototyping with embedded electronic systems
and also my thesis is focusing on using physical computing technology inside the architecture design.
I have taken java programming and sensor technology class
also use arduino , basic stamp and pic micro- controler to do some easy prototyping.
i would like to have 9 credits with Electronics and Mechatronics segements

I am experienced in Vb, Mel, MaxScript, Processing and have used a number of CAD/CAM equipment. I have little knowledge of electronics except some Arduino.

I would like to join this class because I feel that it would push my current interests in programming and digital fabrication much further through electronics and physical computing.

My first contact with programming was during a summer architecture workshop, experimenting on MaxMSP/Jitter, trying to set an interactive installation called “The LightCatcher”.
This semester I am taking the course: 6.01 Introduction to EECS I (Python) in order to obtain skills which I would also like to apply in a course like MAS.962.
Being at the beginning of my graduate studies, I seek my area of interest which will form my further research. I have chosen MAS.962 course because I consider it as a great source for discovering and experimenting on new ideas.

2nd year architecture - 9 credits

Programming: Processing, Java, Rhinoscript, Actionscript

I am a level 2 architecture student with a background in fine arts. At my
previous school I had some experience with electronics for certain projects,
building some simple switches on breadboards and hacking some device into an
inverter to power christmas lights with a couple of 9 volt batteries.

I am interesting in gaining a broad education in architecture especially the
areas where it crosses into other disciplines. I am also very interested in
the relationship between design and fabrication, how the process of building
and experimenting with things can inform design. So I highly value this class
as it can educate me in new areas and modes of creation as well as develop my
understanding of how things are work and are made which I think is highly
valuable for a designer.

1st year MAS graduate. Have worked as a programer for several years. I am interested in fabrication and design in general. This semester I am taking the Physics 123 class. I have several ideas that I want to work on in the near future that will require me to understand fabrication/design and materials. Given this, I am interested in taking the materials segment of this class.

Experience: minimal experience with Java, no knowledge of electronics

Why: I am interested in creating new technologies that could act as a clinical intervention for teenagers. I need to learn how to prototype my ideas.

What: I would love to take this for credit, but I can only listen due to my thesis commitments. I would like to listen to the analog electronics section and ideally, the digital section.

BIO:
I am a registered architect and I have worked for 2 years in London doing parametric/ algorithmic design. I am currently a research assistant at House_n where I’m analyzing behavioral patterns via ubiquitous computing methods.

PROGRAMMING SKILLS:
Java , C# , XML , VB Scripting, Processing, Mel. I’m also familiar with rapid prototyping, water–jet cutting and laser –cutting.

WHY:
I am very interested in taking the mechatronics and electronics class. I am currently using Bluetooth beacons in parallel to mobile phones for my research and I hope that through this class I will develop new skills in using and developing sensors that could further enhance my research. Smart materials are also part of my interests, however it’s an utterly new field for me that I hope I could explore within this class.
